NSW Rugby’s official charity, the NSW Positive Rugby Foundation along with mental health organisation batyr, have trained up local community volunteers in regional NSW to help tackle mental health in their local communities.

The Get Talkin’ Tour, which wraps up this Saturday at Narrabri Rugby Club, has spent the past two weeks visiting over 30 communities with the goal of creating a strong local foundation for positive mental wellbeing in regional communities.

According to James Godfrey, head of the NSW Positive Rugby Foundation, one of the key components of the Get Talkin Tour has been the training of local ambassadors on how to speak safely about mental health and empowering them to start positive conversations in their community.

“The NSW Positive Rugby Foundation’s key goal is to champion wellbeing through rugby and we are delighted to have raised sufficient funds to pilot this program, and with batyr’s expertise, start to break down the stigma associated with mental health,” said James.

In addition to training up local mental health ambassadors, the Get Talkin Tour has delivered community forums, school programs and Positive Rugby sessions featuring NSW Waratahs Harry Johnson-Holmes, Tom Robertson and Alex Newsome, as well as NSW Women’s player Mahalia Murphy and Emily Robinson.

To date more than 1100 school students and residents have attended and participated in conversations about mental health.

The Get Talkin’ Tour is being supported by the Macquarie Group, Macquarie Group Foundation, NSW Country Positive Rugby Foundation, Nick Tooth Foundation, Restore Hope and Liptember.

In addition to working with corporate and philanthropic partners, the NSW Positive Rugby Foundation raises funds through a Coterie membership program, which brings together like-minded individuals who are passionate about supporting rugby and providing funds to support the growth and long terms success of rugby.
